Jan Kozma

Emerita Professor of Italian
Primary office:

Professor Kozma will be retiring from active teaching at KU at the end of AY 2013-14, after a thirty-seven-year career teaching at all levels of language and literature. Her interests while at KU have been teaching and conducting research on 19th- and 20th- century Italian novels and poetry.  She has published on such figures as Alberto Moravia, Vasco Pratolini, Francesca Duranti, and Grazia Deledda, publishing single-authored books on both Moravia and Deledda. She is also author/editor of two text books for university-level Italian language studies, the widely adopted Carosello: A Cultural Reader, and a text edition of Pratolini’s Il quartiere. Recently Professor Kozma has expanded her interests into the field of literary translation, publishing three book-length translations of Grazia Deledda’s novels, Ashes, Marianna Sirca, and Honest Souls. Of late her teaching activities have centered around a sequence of courses (Italian 335 and 336: Italy and the Italians) on Italian civilization and culture, covering such topics as Italian geography, history, archaeology, opera appreciation, art appreciation, history of cinema, the literature of Dante Alighieri and Grazia Deledda, and the history of cuisine and wine as these areas inform Italian culture. Professor Kozma has taught this sequence for the past five years as part of a bi-directional experiment with the Edwards Campus in Kansas City. As she teaches in Lawrence, her lectures are simultaneously broadcast live to her remote classroom, enabling two groups of students to partake of the course activities concurrently.
